A small editorial listening exercise

Help shape a guide for people close to autistic adults

ZenEmu is preparing a practical guide for friends, partners and relatives of autistic adults. We want to begin with the questions people actually have — and with what autistic adults wish the people close to them understood.

What would you like to understand better about an autistic person in your life?

Perhaps you are unsure how to respond when someone becomes overwhelmed, how to communicate without creating pressure, why plans or unexpected changes can be difficult, or how to offer support without taking over.

What would you genuinely like to understand better?

What do you wish the people close to you understood?

We do not want to write this guide solely from the outside looking in. What do you wish people close to you understood about communication, sensory needs, social energy, routines, overwhelm, shutdown, burnout, affection, boundaries or offering help?

We are especially interested in things that are often well-intentioned but unhelpful, and small changes that make relationships easier.

How to respond

You can use the ZenEmu contact form. A short, general question or observation is enough. The examples above are prompts, not a fixed questionnaire.

Please do not include anyone’s name, diagnosis, medical information or identifiable personal circumstances. The form asks for an email address so that it can send your message; it will not be used for a mailing list.

We may use recurring questions to shape the guide. We will not identify or quote anyone without permission. When we review contributions, we keep a separate note of de-identified themes rather than personal stories.

What this page is for — and what it is not

This is an informal editorial exercise to help ZenEmu decide what a useful guide should address. It cannot tell us how common an experience is, and it is not a place to diagnose somebody else or settle an individual relationship problem.

Understanding an autistic person does not mean accepting harmful conduct, and autism does not explain every disagreement. If a relationship feels frightening, controlling or unsafe, use the relevant route on When a guide is not enough instead. If anyone may be in immediate danger, call 999 or go to A&E / an Emergency Department.

Published 21 September 2026. ZenEmu will review contributions after 21 October 2026 before deciding whether to commission a guide.
